Roads claim two more drivers

A MAN was killed when the car he was driving collided with a stone gatepost at Home Farm in Cresselly at 11.15pm on Monday.

The victim, believed to be in his 30s and from Pembroke Dock, was trapped inside the car and had to be cut free by firefighters.

The driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The two passengers were taken to Withybush Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

The passengers had managed to escape from the car before firefighters from Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest arrived.

Only the one vehicle, a Lancia Delta, was involved and it was being driven towards Carew.

Collision investigators from Dyfed-Powys Police have examined the car and the crash site.

Maurice Cole, of the Cresselly Arms, said: "We have been calling for a 35mph speed limit there for a long time. It can be a dangerous enough road in the daytime let alone at night. There is a sharp bend by Home Farm, it can be negotiated but it is very easy to make a mistake."

At the time of going to press identification details of the dead man were not available. Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information should contact PC Craig Morgan of the Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit on 0845 3302000.

This is the second tragic accident on the county's roads this week with another driver killed at Llanddowror on Thursday.

A driver died trapped in a blazing car which burst into flames after it was involved in a three-vehicle collision on Thursday.

The crash took place on the main A477 near the Old Rectory restaurant, Llanddowror on Thursday afternoon, and led to the road being closed for six hours.

Firefighters from Whitland and Carmarthen rushed to the scene, along with police and ambulance personnel, who treated four people at the scene.

The accident, at about 2.58pm on Thursday, involved a van, a green Peugeot 206 and a white Peugeot 205.

The driver of the 205 died at the scene after the car caught fire. The woman driver of the 206 was taken to Glangwili Hospital.

Fire appliances from Whitland and Carmarthen and the rescue tender from Carmarthen attended the scene, and firefighters used two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus. Diversions were set up by police to take traffic via Red Roses and St Clears.

Officers had still not released the identity of the dead driver at the time of going to press. Police are appealing for any witnesses who were travelling on the road between St Clears and Llanddowror shortly before 3pm on Thursday, especially if they saw a white old-style Peugeot 205 on the road. Witnesses are asked to contact Carmarthen police station on 0845 3302000.
