Chips were classy lunch

DEAR EDITOR - So much for the vision of a classless society when the dignitaries could not lunch on a par with the soldiers of the Welsh Guards on whom Pembroke Council had just conferred the freedom of the town.

If pie and chips are good enough for men who are prepared to give their lives for this country, then surely pie and chips are good enough for the rest of us.

MARJORIE HOWELLS 4 Glenview Avenue Pembroke Dock

DEAR EDITOR - As an ex-serviceman I am delighted that the Welsh Guards have been granted the freedom of Pembroke.

The Mayor is quoted as saying that "The freedom will strengthen the bond of friendship between the town and the regiment." Let's hope that in the future the Welsh Guards do not require to conduct night firings at Manorbier or make too much noise on the Castlemartin ranges. Some residents of Pembrokeshire do not seem as keen on the military as Councillor Brinn.
