MR M. WILLIAMS PEMBROKE The death occurred on Wednesday March 8th of Mr Malcolm Williams, of Orange Gardens, Pembroke. Aged 74, he was the husband of Dilys, his wife of 50 years, father to Stephen, Gary and Dean and grandfather to Laura, Meyrick, Layla, Craig, Luke, Samantha, Liam and Steffan. He was a devoted family man, a kind and generous man who was always willing to help anyone, anytime. Malcolm worked as an electrician with various local companies before joining Texaco in 1975 where he stayed until his retirement. He loved golf, bowls, his cardiac group exercises, gardening and the occasional dance. A practical joker with a cheeky smile, Malcolm will be sadly missed. The funeral took place on Monday 13th March at St Michael's Church, Pembroke, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The bearers were sons Stephen, Gary and Dean, grandson Meyrick and brothers Raymond and Nigel. Malcolm leaves to mourn his wife Dilys, Stephen and Kathryn (son and daughter-in-law), Gary and Fiona (son and daughter-in-law), Dean and Debbie (son and daughter-in-law); grandchildren Laura, Meyrick, Layla, Craig, Luke, Samantha, Liam and Steffan; Raymond and Valerie (brother and sister-in-law), Nigel and Colleen (brother and sister-in-law) Peggy and Kelvin (sister-in-law and husband) and many nieces, cousins and friends. Rev Roger Jones officiated, together with Rev Geoffrey Gwyther, Rev Graham Davies and Rev Martin Cox. The organist was Margarate Howells. There were family flowers only, with donations which will be shared between St Michael's Church and ward ten at Withybush hospital which can be sent to Neil Roberts, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
MR D. T. MARTIN HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on March 8th of Mr David Thomas Martin (known as 'Dai the Bull'), aged 55, of Barn Street, Haverfordwest. Canon Geoffrey Gwyther of St David's Church, Prendergast, officiated at the service. Mr Martin died on February 26th. He was a native of St Davids, but moved to Haverfordwest in 1963. Mr Martin did his trade with Walford Davies, painter and decorator. When Walford Davies retired he went to work for Ian Williams Contractors (Cardiff firm). He also went to live in America for a few years. Dai retired last August due to ill health. He enjoyed nights out in Services Club and RNA Club, in his younger days he played darts, and followed the Welsh teams around the world, he loved rugby union and went to support Wales at every opportunity he had. Left to mourn are his sons David, Allan and Thomas; his sister Beryl; nephews Simon and Matthew and niece Allison. The bearers were sons David and Allan Martin, nephews Simon and Matthew Roblin and friends Peter Atyeo and Peter Harries. There were family flowers only with donations to CDU Chemotherapy day unit, Withybush Hospital. Principal mourners were sons David, Allan and Thomas Martin; sister Beryl and brother-in-law Stephen Roblin; niece Allison and partner Richard; nephews Simon Roblin. Matthew and wife Claire Roblin; Jenny from America; Aunt Gwyneth, Uncle Bev, Aunt Sally; cousins Betty John, Beryl May, Trevor and Lyn Martin, Carol and Peter Morris, Terry and Leslie Phillips together with so many family and friends. MR T. M. TAYLOR PEMBROKE DOCK The funeral took place on Wednesday March 8th of Mr Thomas Mackerley Taylor (known as Tommy) who died on February 27th, following a road accident. He was 35. The service at St John's Church, Pembroke Dock was conducted by Rev Andrew Davies, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. The large congregation at St John's paid testimony to the high esteem in which Tommy was held. Tommy will always be remembered for his cheeky grin and infectious laugh and he was always able to brighten most people's day just by walking into the room. Tommy turned his hand to a number of jobs during his life but most recently he had been a successful seIf-employed carpet fitter enabling him to meet many people on a day to day basis. This was one of his many loves in life along with socialising with the many great friends he had made during his life. Tommy will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his partner Salina and their children Callum, Steffan and Bethan; his mother Gwen; Ann, Shirley, June, Peter, Penny, Theresa and Ian (brothers and sisters); Mario, Dereck, Dee, Peter, Klaus and Julie (brothers and sister-in-law); Kelly, Kristie, Theresa, Grant, Rhys, Emily, Rhiannon, Louise, Craig, Ellen, Jake, Tarryn, Casey, Zoe, John, Kim and Robbie (nieces and nephews), Dot (mother-in-law); Teresa, Clive, Robert and William. MRS E. GEORGE FISHGUARD The private family funeral took place at Feidr Castell Chapel of Rest, Fishguard on March 16th, followed by interment at Llangloffan cemetery of Mrs Eirwen George, of Parc Newydd, Dwrbach, Fishguard. Rev Jon Roberts officiated at the service, assisted by Rev Carl Williams and Rev Geoffrey Eynon. Mrs George, aged 92, died on March 11th at Withybush Hospital. Mrs George was a native of St Nicholas, Castlemorris and Llangloffan. She spent 30 years farming at Upper House, Llangloffan with her late husband, William Higgon, prior to their retirement when they moved to Parc Newydd. She was a faithful member of Llangloffan Baptist Chapel for more than 75 years. She was predeceased by her husband William Higgon. Family left to mourn are Rita Raymond (daughter); Eirug and Meral George (son and daughter-in-law); Lloyd and Hazel Evans (brother and sister-in-law); Mary Evans (sister); grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The bearers were grandsons Andrew, Graham and David Raymond and Lloyd George. Principal mourners were Rita (daughter); Eirug and Meral (son and daughter-in-law); Lloyd and Hazel Evans (brother and sister-in-law); Moira George (sister-in-law);' Andrew and Mair, Graham and Gillian, Hilary and Martin, David and Wendy, Alexandra, Lloyd and Sharon (grandchildren); Rhodri, Sarah and Matthew, Samantha, Lydia, Matthew, Bethany (great grandchildren), nephews and nieces and cousins too numerous to mention. MR D. R. EVANS MONKTON There was a large attendance at the funeral on February 28th at Monkton Priory Church, with interment at Monkton Cemetery, of Mr Denis Roland Evans, of Monkton Lane, Monkton, Pembroke. Rev Martin Cox officiated at the service. Denis died at Withybush Hospital on February 19th, aged 83. Denis was a keen gardener, but his main enjoyment in life was his family, and in later years he spent many happy hours with his nine great-grandchildren. In September 2004 Denis and Weena celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. He worked at Hussey, Egan and Pickmere, Pembroke for 42 years. The bearers were Spencer Harries, Simon Harries, Wayne Brickle and Ashley Davies (grandsons). He is survived by his wife Weena Evans. Principal mourners were Weena Evans (wife); Marion Brickle (daughter); Diane and Mike Harries (daughter and son-in-law); Wayne and Carol Brickle (grandson and wife); Spencer and Sue Harries (grandson and wife); Simon and Dawn Harries (grandson and wife); Sara and Ashley Davies (granddaughter and husband); Kayleigh Brickle, Rhiannon Harries, Tom Harries (great grandchildren); Gwen Toulouse (sister-in-law) and numerous nephews and nieces. MRS I. M. VILES LLANSTADWELL The death occurred on March 15th at Withybush Hospital of Mrs Iris May Viles, of Lodge Gate, Hazel Hill, Llanstadwell, aged 76. Mrs Viles was a native of Salcombe, South Devon and worked as a wages clerk. Her interests were gardening, birdwatching and embroidery. Family left to mourn are: John (husband); Neil (son); Chrissy (daughter-in-law); Alice, Gemma, Rebekha, Duncan, Sam and Joe (grandchildren). The funeral took place on Thursday, March 23rd at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was conducted by Rev Paul Flavell. Principal mourners were: John (husband); Neil (son); Chrissy (daughter-in-law); Alice, Gemma, Rebekha, Duncan, Sam and Joe (grandchildren). MRS M. GWYTHER COSHESTON The death occurred on March 2nd at Woodfield Grove, Cosheston, of Mrs Peggy Gwyther. She was 79. Born in Monkton, she moved to Cosheston after her marriage to Tommy in 1953, who predeceased her in 1971. Peggy spent all her working life as an administrative clerk with Hancock's Brewery, Pembroke. In 1972, she moved to the new depot at Narberth when it was taken over by Welsh Breweries. She retired in 1987. She was an avid reader and loved gardening and enjoyed the company of her many friends and family. She was a member of the Pembroke Dock Stroke Association where she made many friends. She leave to mourn Sheila (sister); Sylvia and Ken (sister and brother-in-law); David and Mildred (brother and sister-in-law), and numerous nephews and nieces. There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place at St Michael's Church, Cosheston on March 13th, followed by interment in the churchyard. The service was officiated by Rev Robert Gordon. The bearers were Stephen and Micheal Hughes (nephews), Stephen Lloyd and Kevin Watts. MISS T. NICHOLLS SAUNDERSFOOT The death occurred on March 11th at Withybush Hospital, of Miss Tilly Nicholls, of Harry's Tump, Sardis, Saundersfoot. She was 97. Miss Nicholls was from Sardis and went into service as a maid at the age of 16, working for the same employer until 1954, returning home when her mother died. Tilly then worked as a housekeeper for Mr and Mrs Cobb, at Selwyn House School, Begelly. She was a member of Saundersfoot and Kilgetty Guild of Friendship, Saundersfoot Caring Society and was a regular worshipper at St Issell's church, Saundersfoot. Family left to mourn are: Graham and Jean Picton, Peter Nicholls, Mr and Mrs Gareth Nicholls, Mr B. Picton, Mr and Mrs Gwyn Nicholls (nephews). Unable to attend was Margaret Nicholls, London (niece). The funeral took place on March 17th, at St Issell's, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth and was conducted by Canon M. Butler. The bearers at the church were P. Nicholls, G. Nicholls, Gwyn Nicholls and D. Nicholls and at the crematorium were Luke Nicholls, Michael Nicholls, David Nicholls and Lloyd Nicholls. MR G. YOUNG PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred peacefully on March 3rd, at Withybush Hospital, of Mr George Young, of 16 Front Street, Pembroke Dock. He was 82. Mr Young was born in Bournemouth and at the age of 19 he served with the RAF as a training sergeant based at the Gun Tower, Front Street, Pembroke Dock. On leaving the RAF, George worked for Pembroke Borough and South Pembrokeshire District Council as a painter and decorator, retiring at the age of 60. His main interest was football. He was a member of Pembroke Borough Football Club for more than 40 years and served as chairman for several years. He was also a member of the RAFA Club, Commercial Row and chairman for the last three years. George was married for 62 years and was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. Family left to mourn are: Hannah (wife); Carol and Terry Threlfall (daughter and son-in-law); George and Jean Young (son and daughter-in-law); Marcus and Samantha Threlfall, Jason and Kate Threlfall, Gethin Young and Jenny Hicks, Luke Young, Sarah Young (grandchildren and partners); Jake, Cian, and Emily Threlfall (great-grandchildren). The funeral took place on March 13th at St John's church followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev Andrew Davies and the eulogy was by Vernon Scott. The bearers were Marcus and Jason Threlfall, Gethin and Luke Young, Raymond Asparassa and Phil Tallet. Principal mourners were: Hannah (wife); Carol and Terry Threlfall and family (daughter and son-in-law); George and Jean Young and family (son and daughter-in-law); and other family members. DAVIES ST DAVIDS Tommy Davies of Maes Dyfed, St Davids, died at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest on March 11th after a long illness. He was 77. Tommy was well known throughout north Pembrokeshire as a fisherman and boatman, having been associated with Porthclais Harbour for most of his life. Thomas Henry Davies was born near Llanrhian in 1928 and educated at St Davids Junior School while growing up in Clegyr Boia on the outskirts of St Davids. Tommy worked at sea and within the local farming community and was a member of the St Davids lifeboat crew before National Service with the army. In 1952 Tommy married Laurine and moved to Heol Dewi in St Davids where they lived until moving to Maes Dyfed in 2004. The couple had four children; Ann, Phil, Wendy (pre-deceased aged six weeks in 1956), and Gareth. Tommy was employed with the MOD at Brawdy and then as a driver with Western Welsh at their St Davids bus depot. He worked as an engineer at various oil refineries in south Pembrokeshire before returning to the transport section within the MOD at Brawdy. Among those left to mourn are his beloved wife Laurine, children Ann, Phil and Gareth and sister Gwyneth. He was a devoted grandfather to Michelle, Richard, Myfanwy and Rhodri and to Hannah, Will and Lucy. He was a dear great-grandfather to Rosie, Sid and Kiki and also to Holly and Evie. The funeral took place at Berea Chapel near Croesgoch on Friday, March 17th followed by interment at the chapel cemetery. Rev Huw George officiated at the service and was assisted by John Evans. The organist was Ruth Barker. A reading was given by Myfanwy Davies and the eulogy by Gareth Davies, during which a poem by Tony Davies, of St Davids was read. The bearers were Andrew, Rowland and Geraint Phillips and Nigel Thomas, all nephews. There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the Pembrokeshire Deaf Society and Pembrokeshire Blind Society, to Barclays Bank, 3 High Street, St Davids. The funeral arrangements were conducted by David Price, of Croesgoch. MRS M. HICKS, HAVERFORDWEST (formerly of Tenby) The funeral took place on Wednesday, March 8th of Mrs Margot Hicks, formerly of Snowdrop Close, Haverfordwest, and Lamack Vale, Tenby. Mrs Hicks, who was 79, died at Fairfield Residential and Nursing Home, Johnston, where she had been a resident for two years. Born in Schlebusch, near Cologne, she married Percy Hicks, who was serving with the Royal Engineers. During Percy's Army career the family lived in Hamelin and Dortmund in Germany; Chatham; Nicosia and Limassol in Cyprus; Scarborough; Dunblane and Stirling in Scotland; Benghazi, Libya; Blackpool and Lancaster, finally moving to Pembrokeshire, where they lived in Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest. Margot owned and ran the Hospital Shop in Bush Row, Haverfordwest, for several years and was also in partnership in a dress shop for a short time. After leaving the Army, Percy worked for the Department of Environment and Margot moved with him to Southampton where they lived for 11 years. They returned to Pembrokeshire and made their home in Tenby where they very much enjoyed retirement. Margot's interests centred on her family and home and she and Percy loved nothing more than having their children and grandchildren visit them. They moved back to Haverfordwest in 2000, but sadly Percy died only a few months later. Margot had not enjoyed good health for the last few years and two years ago became a resident of Fairfields, where she was cared for by dedicated staff. Following two spells in Withybush Hospital, Margot died peacefully at Fairfield on March 2nd. She leaves to mourn her four children Doris Goddard, Raymond, Roger and Ralph Hicks, son-in-law Ted; daughters-in-law Margaret and Michelle; grandchildren Karen Chambers and husband Paul, Emma Hicks, and Lawrence, Rhydian and Sophie Hicks; and great grandson Daniel Chambers, born only three weeks before Margot died. The funeral service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, was conducted by Canon Derek Evans. The principal mourners were Doris and Ted, Roger and Margaret, Ralph and Michelle, Raymond and Linda; grandsons Lawrence and Rhydian Hicks; nephews and their wives, Christopher and Roni Hicks and Peter and Val Hicks. Unable to attend were granddaughter Karen, husband Paul and baby son Daniel, from Crossgar, Northern Ireland; granddaughter, Emma, who is at university in Massachusetts, USA; granddaughter, Sophie, of Cardiff; brother-in-law Raymond Hicks, who was in hospital; sisters-in-law Joan and Margery Hicks, of Rhayader, and relatives in Germany. There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for Fairfield Nursing Home, to The Matron, Church Road, Johnston. MRS F. K. STURLEY MARLOES The death occurred on March 2nd at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Frances Kathleen Sturley, of Tower View, Marloes, Haverfordwest, aged 91. Mrs Sturley was born in Marloes in 1914 and on leaving school, started work at Musslewick Farm. Frances worked at various farms in the Marloes area and in 1937 she married Harold Sturley. Harold was tragically killed in May 1960, leaving Frances devastated. In 2002 Frances suffered the loss of her son-in-law Peter James, and in January 2004 her dear son Peter Sturley. Frances enjoyed taking part in many village activities and was always willing to help out at various events. She was a faithful worshipper all her life at Moriah Baptist chapel, Marloes. Predeceased by her husband, Harold, Frances leaves to mourn: Ann James (daughter); Kathy Sturley (daughter-in-law); Paul and Mandy James, David and Nadine Scale (grandchildren); Thomas James, William James, Claudia James, Bethany Scale, Isabelle Scale and Victoria Pritchard (great grandchildren); Patsy Howells (sister) Hilda John (sister-in-law). A private service was held on Monday, March 6th at Moriah Baptist chapel, Marloes, followed by interment at Marloes Churchyard. The service was conducted by Rev Paul Bartlett and Rev G. R. Price and the organist was Jean Davies. Bearers were Paul James, David Scale, Thomas James, and William James (grandsons and great grandsons). Principal mourners were: Ann James, Kathy Sturley, Paul and Mandy James, David and Nadine Scale, Thomas James, William James, Claudia James, Victoria Pritchard; also nephews, nieces and close friends. Unable to attend were Bethany and Isabelle Scale, Patsy Howells and Hilda John. The funeral arrangements were carried out by F. G. Rees and Son, Portfield Gate.
MR C. A. HOWELLS HUNDLETON Mr Charles Arthur Howells, of The Gables, Hundleton, died at Ashdale Care Home on March 9th, aged 90. He was the last of a family of ten born at The Clay Pits, Merrion. On leaving Warren school he worked on local farms, until the government claimed much of the range land, including the family home, and they then moved to Warren. During the war he erected radio masts up and down the country. He married Mary in 1946, moving to London for a short while working as a steeplejack, returning to Pembroke on the death of his father. He worked for Hadsfeltic and then Merrion Camp, retiring after 25 years. His main interest was gardening which prompted him to become a member of Pembroke District Gardening Club. He was also a member of the local Auxiliary Coastguards, now known as St Govans Cliff Rescue Team, and Thorne chapel played a big part in his life and he was greatly saddened when it closed 18 months ago. Predeceased by his wife Mary in 1993, he is survived by his two daughters Margaret and Sandra; sons-in-law Peter and Gwyn; six grandchildren Christopher, Samantha, Martin, Jeremy, Stephen and Michael; and great grandchildren Jack, Amelia, Harriet and Jonathon. The funeral was held at Gilead chapel on March 17th, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. Rev Martin Evans officiated, assisted by Rev Arwyn Thomas, Rev Martin Cox and Rev Anthony Gregory. Principal mourners were: Peter and Margaret, Gwyn and Sandra, Christopher and Anita, Samantha, Jack, Jeremy, Stephen, Michael and Helen; together with many nieces, nephews and friends, including members of Ashdale Care Home. Unable to attend were Martin, Rachel and Mark (grandchildren); and sisters-in-law Mary Howells, Harlow and Maureen Phillips, Pembroke Dock. Bearers were grandsons Christopher, Jeremy, Stephen and Michael and friends David Lloyd and Joe Miller. MRS C. G. M. KELLY FREySTROP (formerly of Pembroke) The funeral of Clara Gladys Marriott Kelly took place at St Mary's church, Pembroke on Tuesday, March 14th, followed by interment at Monkton Cemetery. Rev Roger Jones officiated at the church and cemetery. Clara Kelly will be remembered by many for the small grocery business she ran with her husband Jack on Dark Lane, Pembroke, until her retirement in 1980. She was born at Priory Terrace, Monkton and went on to further education in Westminster College, London, where she became a dispenser. During the war she worked in London hospitals and was a volunteer fire watcher. She returned to Pembroke in 1953 to care for her ailing mother. She leaves two daughters Sheelagh Kelly, of Basingstoke, Hampshire and Moira Wainwright, of Freystrop. Also left to mourn are her granddaughters Victoria and Alexandra. In recent years she had moved to live with her daughter and granddaughters in Freystrop. Funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son of Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.
MR I. JAMES HAVERFORDWEST The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 16th of Ishmael (Ish) James, of Bank Row, Dew Street, Haverfordwest. He was 61. A native of Haverfordwest, Ish served for eight years in The South Wales Borders (Royal Welch Fusiliers) seeing two years active service in Aden and was a National Parks warden until his retirement. A quiet and unassuming man, he was liked by all who knew him. His interests were his family, his home and his dog. He leaves to mourn his wife Rita, to whom Ish was simply the best, his sister Margaret and step-children Steven, Michael, Tony and Tina. The funeral took place on Friday, March 24th with a service at St David's church, Prendergast followed by interment at Prendergast Cemetery. There were family flowers only with donations for the Haverfordwest Branch of the Royal British Legion to Mrs G. Harrison, 36 Milton Close, Haverfordwest. The service was taken by Canon G. Gwyther and the bearers were Terry Griffiths (Tucker), Peter Edwards, Handel Edwards and David Gunn. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Roy Folland and Son, 27 Cartlett, Haverfordwest.
MR J.W. SUDBURY PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on Sunday, March 19th of Mr Jack Sudbury, aged 91. Jack was born in Llanion House, Pembroke Dock, the second of five brothers. He trained as an apprentice carpenter, before joining Trinity House as a lighthouse keeper for 18 months, working on lighthouses around the coast of Britain. Throughout the Second World War, Jack served as a sergeant with the RAF in Greece, the Middle East, India and Burma. After his marriage to Joan in 1944, his final short posting was to Carew airfield. After the war, Jack attended Leavesden Green Teacher Training College, London, returning home to take up his first appointment at Neyland Junior School in 1949. He transferred to Albion Square School in 1953, becoming deputy head in 1961, remaining there throughout his teaching career, moving to the Argyle Street site prior to retirement. Jack had a passion for sport, he boxed during his time in the forces, and played rugby for Pembroke Dock Quins. In later years he played bowls, representing the county on a regular basis. He was made a Life President of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club. Jack attended Bethel Baptist Church, Argyle Street, until the death of his father in 1963, after when he attended St John's Church, where his wife had been a lifelong member. He was predeceased by his wife Joan, who died five days earlier at Withybush Hospital. They had one daughter, Jane Hordley, married to Peter, and one granddaughter Sarah and partner Ben, living in Cardiff. The funeral took place at St John's Church on Thursday March 23rd, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. Rev Andrew Davies conducted the service, assisted by Canon Rev Derek Evans. The bearers were Brian Dowling and Leslie Davies, of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club, and former teaching colleagues Bert Jones and Llewelyn Rogers. There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu, to Pembroke Dock Bowling Club, to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock. The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C.Thomas and Son, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock.
MISS N. DAVIES NARBERTH Miss Nancy Davies, of Caledonia, Wisemans Bridge, Narberth, died at her home on Wednesday, March 15th, aged 87. Miss Davies was a native of the Rhondda Valley but moved to Pembrokeshire more than 20 years ago. She worked in the nursing profession all of her life and her main interest was gardening and growing flowers. She was predeceased by her sister Doreen in October 2005, who she was devoted to and with whom she shared a home. The funeral took place on Friday, March 24th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was conducted by Rev Robin Webley. The bearers were Maurice North, Dorian Evans, Arthur Evans and Graham Thomas. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Stewart Treharne of E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside.
