As this is my first blog I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Sally Owen and I am a Careers Adviser with Careers Wales West. I work full time and my days are either spent in the Careers Centre on Haverfordwest High Street, Pembrokeshire College or in Sir Thomas Picton School. My main responsibilities of my role is to provide impartial careers guidance, information and advice to 14 – 19 year olds. I feel very fortunate to be employed in a role that helps people with their futures and I thoroughly enjoy my job!

I work as part of a team of careers advisers – based in Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock as well as all secondary schools in West Wales and Pembrokeshire College. Between us all we provide support to adults, clients with learning difficulties and disabilities as well as 14 – 19 year olds. Whether you’re about to leave education, hoping to go back into education, looking for a career change/new job or if you are out of work we will hopefully be able to help you move forward.

The service we provide is confidential, impartial and essentially led by you. We always find it helpful if you prepare yourself before your interview with us. By this I mean have a think about what you’d like from your interview. Do you require help with your CV, decision making (deciding on what you actually want to do or indeed what you can do), advice on courses and qualifications available to you, help with motivation and confidence or even just applying for jobs. If you’re prepared then hopefully it will help you move forward more quickly. If you require something that we can’t help you with – we will signpost you to the correct agency.

Our service is free of charge and Careers Wales prides itself on employing NVQ 4 qualified Careers Advisers who are continually trained to ensure that you receive the best service and support possible.

My next blog is going to introduce you to colleagues from the local area and I will be going into a little bit more detail of how Careers Wales may be able to help YOU!
