Words are potent! Words are powerful symbols of communication. Human history and culture has largely been recorded by way of the spoken and written word, and storytelling has played an integral part of human existence. People make sense of their own lives through the stories of others. From the medieval days of travelling troubadours to the present day columns in celebrity magazines and rhyming lyrics of rappers, stories have served to illuminate our deepest desires, highlighting our hopes and fears, embodying our flares of anger and the flames of our passion.
Have you ever asked yourself why it is that you to chose to be some place in preference to others? Why you feel drawn to gaze at certain landscapes, to explore the hills and dales of your seemingly random choice of homeland or holiday destination?
Some seven years ago, I was working full- time on the front- line in the criminal justice system; studying post- grad, part- time; in addition to being a wife, and mother to three young children.
Picture this: a mellow, Sunday morning walk on a deserted beach. Breathing in the fresh air, lightly scented with seaweed; watching the dogs splashing in the salty surf. A welcome warp of peace and relaxation, in a week of emotional demands and tense decisions. Bliss!
The first six weeks or so of this year have been imbued with the essence of patience for me. Doing nothing, whilst waiting for others to do something has, in fact, shown me that even when you remain perfectly still there will still be circles of movement around you.
Sometimes the balancing act is as simple as stopping to appreciate a beautiful sunset!
It’s been a while! A whole year actually… And yes, I could say that the Juggler dropped a ball; the one with ‘blog' written on it.
Perhaps it’s just me, but I get a sense that in general terms ‘doing’ is far more valued in the world of business than ‘being’.
How do you score on the FT (Frustration Tolerance) Index?
As a teenager I was highly influenced by John Pilger’s 1986 book “Heroes”.
So now the New year is well and truly underway and resolutions of change have either become part of our lives or have long been abandoned.
