So far M.M.O's on consoles have been virtually non-existent. It's arguable whether or not Phantasy Star Online can be called an M.M.O. at all. Final Fantasy 11 has proved relatively popular but hasn't reached the massive lvl of popularity of World Of Warcraft on P.C.
This year that may change. Sega's Alpha Protocol is interesting for a few reasons. The game is set in what is described as a living, 'role-playing world.' It eschew's the normal sword and sorcery trappings for what looks to be a shadow filled world of action and espionage. It's Bourne not Baldur. A reactive game world and open skill trees also promise a good deal of freedom as you mould your own secret agent.
It's been long rumoured that Electronic Art's have been exploring the logistical aspects of a console M.M.O. Last year E.A. acquired Bioware. Bioware are developing The Old Republic, a Star Wars based M.M.O. You do the math. With family and core friendly I.P. like that it's possible The Old Republic could torpedo the gaming Deathstar that is W.O.W. and would be a perfect fit for the P.S.3 or 360.
At the Consumer Electronics Show this year, Howard Stringer, Sony's first western CEO, stated that a free M.M.O. community, aimed at teenager's, would launch for the P.S.N. in the near future.
What do you think? Could a fully featured M.M.O. work on PS3 or 360? What do you think about M.M.O.'s in general?
