Stack Rocks to Freshwater East Sunday July 5th along with 4 WI members and a WI husband, Daphne myself and Graham walked from Stack Rocks to Freshwater East, a continuation of the previous walk on the Castlemartin Range, still the Ministry of Defence land but the army have opened it up to St Govens Head.

It is a fine stretch on open cliffs above isolated stacks, arches, caves and inlets, and very interesting is Bullslaughter Bay, Huntsmans Leap and St Govens Chapel.

There were a lot of climbers in this area, I would rather be walking!

Plenty of bird life to be seen – Ravens, Jackdaws, Choughs and Oystercatchers, and the Guillemot colony.

The wild flowers were beautiful – blue squills, sea lavendar, wild orchids and even evening primrose. The heather is just beginning to flower, must go back and see that!

Broad Haven is a lovely beach, golden sands and dunes.

Barafundle is another lovely beach, unspoilt and not to crowded, but I’m pleased to say there was a few generous people at Broad Haven, Barafundle and Stackpole Quay that gave happily to our ‘Highway Man’ Graham.

Stackpole Quay, once a limestone quarry is a small artificial harbour now belonging to the National Trust.

The coast path in places was more strenuous from here on, and also the weather deteriated quite a lot, heavy showers had made the path slippery, still we pladded on to Freshwater East and up the hill to Upper Portclew Farm where three very kind ladies - Margaret, Joan and Edith from Lamphey WI had tea and cakes laid on for us.

It was very much appreciated by us eight walkers, it is so nice when Daphne and myself get support from fellow members.

On Wednesday 8th July we are going back to Pickleridge in Dale to cross the Gann then the Stepping Stones into Sandy Haven on a low tide – I hope! Tuesday 14th July we will carry on from Freshwater East to Skringle Haven.
