Shirley Thomas and Daphne Morgan are taking on the 190 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path to raise money for WI House in Haverfordwest.
In this blog they will share their experiences during their walk on the coast path.
On Saturday July 25th, Daphne, myself and Graham set off with mixed feeling for our last of the Sponsored walks for Raise The Roof Appeal.
Tuesday July 14th we walked from Freshwater East to Skrinkle, with our good supporters – Dilys and David, Mo, Audrey, Gloria and Daphne’s sons dog Merlin who is on his holidays with her.
On Wednesday July 8th Daphne myself and Graham were joined by our friends Dilys and David, and Mo and Eileen to walk the 5-6 miles from Pickleridge to Sandy Haven.
Stack Rocks to Freshwater East Sunday July 5th along with 4 WI members and a WI husband, Daphne myself and Graham walked from Stack Rocks to Freshwater East, a continuation of the previous walk on the Castlemartin Range, still the Ministry of Defence land but the army have opened it up to St Govens Head.
Walk on Castlemartin Range On Sunday June 27th we were allowed access across Castlemartin Range west, this is the section normally closed off to the public, but with permission from the army we walked across saving quite a bit of mileage on road We were told we could take a party of 30 so WI members and husbands and a few friends joined in. Daphne and Graham had instructions previously from the army commander and led the party on the walk.
WALKS ON SUNDAY 21st July & TUESDAY 23rd July On Sunday June 21st, Daphne Graham, myself and two friends from Lamphey walked from Pembroke Castle to Popton point (BP Angle) 9 miles.
On Sunday June 14th, Daphne, myself, Graham and the 4 WI members that has been our biggest supporters – Mo & Eileen from Llanddewi Velfrey WI and Shealgh and Carole from Menevia WI joined us for the tough stretch between Angle and Freshwater West. We left the cars at Freshwater West and got on the Coastal Shuttle to walk back from West Angle.
Sunday June 7th and Tuesday June 9th The walk on Sunday June 7th was from Sandy Haven to the Cleddau Bridge about 12 miles.
Whitesun Walks On Saturday 23rd of May- myself, Daphne, Graham and a few friends walked from Martins Haven to Pickleridge in Dale. Getting on the Puffin Shuttle at Dale to Martins Haven. Although a long stretch “ just over 11 miles”, it was a fairly easy walk without to many climbs. What I have noticed on our walk around the coast path is the great improvements the National Parks have made – putting up gates instead of styles and maintaining the path so well, and also bringing it further inland where there is danger of subsidence.
Another notch under the belt- on Sunday 3rd May, Broad Haven to Martins Haven just over 10 miles. Daphne and myself along with our “minder Graham” were joined by 3 other WI ladies. A lovely walk with only a few up hill grunts! There are no styles on this section just wicket gates and kissing gates – there are more than 90 steps to climb tho’. As other sections – the coastal slopes were rich in wild flowers, and in the first half- an un-usual experience of walking with a wood between us and the sea below.
