Seagulls suffer after prop injury

10:00am Wednesday 16th January 2008

Penygroes 18.

Fishguard and Goodwick 0.

Fishguard's hopes of a double over Pontyates came to nothing as their spark was undeniably dimmed when young prop Chris Yates was injured in the first half and taken to hospital.

Coach Alan Phillips said afterwards: "We had beaten Pontyates by 26-22 at The Moors and although there wasn't any scoring after half an hour we were very much in the game. When Chris got injured our lads understandably lost their focus and found it hard going after that."

The Seagulls trailed by only three points at the interval. Paul Griffiths landed a Pontyates penalty, and Gwilym Evans moved up to prop alongside Gerwyn Davies and Mark James to battle really hard.

Half backs Matthew and Alun George tried to keep their pack going forward but home No 8 Matthew Boswell claimed a soft try, followed by a penalty try for a late tackle, which Griffiths converted to go with a late penalty.

This left Fishguard with little to show for a lot of effort overall.

Fishguard and Goodwick: Rhodri Thomas: Lorenzo Giacci (Gavin Walsh); Stephan Kurtz (Jonathan Jones); Rupert Dunn; Dylan Roberts; Alun George; Matthew George; Gerwyn Davies; Mark James; Chris Yates (Richard Hunter); Gwilym Evans; Andrew Merry; Simon James (Capt); Mark George; Dan Charsley.
