ER (Thursday, More4, 9pm)
It was one of television’s worst-kept secrets, but who cares?
George Clooney returns to ER in a double bill, reprising his role as Dr Doug Ross, who is now the attending physician on a transplant team in Seattle.
Ross’ transplant team also included another ER returnee, Juliana Margulies’ nurse Carol Hathaway, who is now Mrs Doug Ross.
Doug has to use all his charm to convince the grieving grandmother of a 16-year-old bicycle accident victim (Susan Sarandon), to donate the boy’s organs.
By chance, some of those organs are intended for Chicago — including a kidney for Noah Wyle’s Dr John Carter, who was one of Ross’ fellow doctors when the medical show began in 1994.
While current County staff Neela (Parminder Nagra) and Sam (Linda Cardellini) travel to Seattle, Carter waits to find out if the kidney will be arriving, and is visited by his former mentor, Eriq La Salle’s Dr Peter Benton.
This final, 15th series of the award-laden medical drama has been something of a sentimental journey for fans, as many of the show’s former cast members popped in to say goodbye. These include Anthony Edwards’ Dr Mark Greene (in a flashback sequence), Alex Kingston’s Dr Elizabeth Corday and Laura Innes’ Kerry Weaver (also in flashback).
As the end gets closer, perhaps it’s time to start stocking up on tissues.
