Get in the swim at the Torch Theatre

8:40am Thursday 25th June 2009

As fish week begins, The Little Mermaid will be making a splash at the Torch Theatre on Saturday.

Staged in the Studio Theatre, Uncontained Arts in association with Tangere Arts and Buxton Opera House will perform a fabulous production of Hans Christian Anderson’s famous fairytale.

A colourful combination of puppetry, songs, live music, and physical theatre, this enchanting new play is a perfect opportunity for the whole family to lose themselves in an exciting world set in the most mysterious depths of the ocean.

It isn’t difficult to understand why The Little Mermaid remains one of the most popular children’s stories of all time, and Uncontained Arts have transformed it into a charming piece of theatre for children, with catchy songs and some very beautiful set-pieces.

A newly-formed theatre company, Uncontained Arts was set up by four graduates of the Theatre Arts department at Derby University. The cast of three, cleverly alternate between a group of Victorian children playing on the beach who decide to act out the story, and the characters in the fairytale. With the aid of their puppets, they transport us to where mermaids live side by side with the sea creatures and where music is the only language.

Every fairytale has an element of fun, adventure and lessons —sometimes hard ones — to be learned along the way, and The Little Mermaid is no exception.

Despite her magical surroundings, The Little Mermaid yearns to be part of the human world. She has her own dreams, and one of those is to marry a human prince. But, by selling her voice to the Sea Witch in exchange for legs, she could never imagine the price she would pay.

The Little Mermaid can be seen at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven on Saturday, at 2pm and 4pm. Tickets are £8 (or £7 for concessions) available from the box office on 01646 695267 or www.torchtheatre.co.uk.
