Local artist Paul Baker-Jones is starting his year of exhibitions with a show at the Cloisters Gallery at St David’s Cathedral.

The exhibition of his paintings, one of his first, opened last Tuesday.

This is a chance to take a look at Paul’s colourful paintings of local beauty spots and idyllic scenes.

Paul spent many years performing with the cutting edge new wave rock band Red Beat, which he formed with his brothers Roy and Martin in 1979.

The band performed with Joy Division, U2, The Thompson Twins and many more before Paul took up the paintbrush.

Paul is credited with the creation of www.

drumology.co.uk and bringing drumologist in to the musical lexicon.

He moved to Pembrokeshire in 2005 and uses acrylic, watercolour, pastel and gouache to paint his county scenes. He is currently concentrating on florals, seascapes and landscapes.

A qualified carpenter, Paul also designs his own frames. With so many strings to his bow, Paul is a creative force to be reckoned with and his work is sure to become more and more popular.

“I felt confident enough to show people my work, it takes time to get your work up to standard and I feel I have arrived there now,” said Paul.

The Cloisters Gallery is a beautiful venue for an exhibition. The light and feel of the building create a relaxing venue for art lovers and those who stumble across the gallery alike.

The new gallery, located in St Mary’s Hall, is adjacent to The Refectory, offering good food and interesting exhibitions throughout the year.

“I am just inspired really by Pembrokeshire — the beautiful views and landscape just make you want to create things,” said Paul.

Following the exhibition in St Davids, Paul’s work will be on show at Pembroke Dock Library in July. He has also created images for the spring edition of CND Cymru’s Heddwch.

Paul has a long-held opposition to nuclear weapons and often incorporates symbols relating to the Ban the Bomb cause in his work.

“My philosophical desire is to abolish nuclear weapons and put an end to the arms manufacturing industry. War must be abolished.

“I believe in the advancement of civilisation and that humanity must collectively work towards creating a positive and peaceful future for life on earth,” he said.
