Her encounter with Freddie Page, a troubled former Royal Air Force pilot throws her life in turmoil, as their erotic relationship leaves her emotionally stranded and physically isolated. This really is a terrible film - an example of how to take a great play and then make a total mess of it. That overrated director, Terence Davies, has taken the bare bones of the plot, changed the dialogue, removed some interesting characters and added others that add nothing to the story. The film drags on endlessly at a snail's pace, with some scenes having either very little or no dialogue at all. One long tracking shot in the London underground, during a bombing raid, seemed to go forever, yet serving no purpose whatsoever. Much of the film is shot in darkness, with rather muffled sound. I saw it at the Duke of Yorks, where the usual lousy projection is dark at the best of times. So it was difficult to make out much of the dialogue anyway. The actors appeared to be mumbling and the picture was not light enough to lip read. If I was not stuck in the middle of a row, I would have left long before the end, by which time I felt almost as suicidal as the main character. Nice music though! Bring back the old Vivien Leigh/Kenneth More version, but show it in a different cinema please.
