CONNOR ADAMS ‘DIRTY DISHES’ CD

Connor Adams, a 14 year old singer/songwriter from Pembroke Dock, who secured the prestigious support slot to UB40 at their recent sold-out concert in Pembroke Castle after winning the hard fought Milford Mercury Talent Competition a few months ago, has just released his first CD.

Entitled ‘Dirty Dishes’, it is a 10 track album of largely self-penned songs (Connor’s dad Stuart wrote the lyrics for some of the tunes) recorded at producer Nick Swannell’s Studio 49 in Narberth.

Not since the appearance on the local music scene of Haverfordwest’s Lucy Jones, 4 or 5 years ago (she’s still only 19), have I heard such an accomplished and confident young solo performer with such a depth of talent.

Sure Connor has an affinity with the likes of mega-star Ed Sheeran and has also soaked up the influences of an older generation, through his regular visits to open mics such as Pembroke Musicians Club (which meets every Monday in Monkton Swifts Club). There’s a knowledge and appreciation of folk and country and much more in his music. Also, the thing is he’s got his own unique sound – a proficient, largely self-taught guitarist, possessed of a world weary voice and a lyrical maturity that belies his years, Connor makes music that is simply quite beautiful to hear. I’m reminded of a young John Martyn, but then my references are very old school (I don’t use beard oil and my dentures are on the right way round).

Certainly Nick Swannell has cleverly recorded, apparently in only one take, Connor just as he is - raw and unadorned, emotionally true - which allows his special talent to take centre stage. This is how Connor is, there’s no flim flam. Plenty of time for that in the anguished third album crisis period. For now enjoy this album. Not because it’s the product of some precocious teenager who has a bright future ahead of him, no, enjoy it because it’s a mighty fine album anyone might be proud to make, a transport of delight.

Connor Adams can be found on social media if you want to buy the CD or book him.

NB. The fine artwork on the album, which reflects its title (washing dirty dishes was Connor’s first experience of paid work) was created by Connor’s art teacher, Justin Griffiths – a pal of Stuart and member of that never to be forgotten pop combo Little Baby Cheeses.
