BUDDING poets, writers and dramatists have the chance to make their mark with this year’s Penfro Book Festival competitions.

The annual book festival – based at Rhosygilwen in Cilgerran and now in its seventh year – has doubled the number of competitions for 2017 with Welsh poetry and a short radio drama being added to the English poetry and first chapter competitions.

The first chapter competition is being judged by renowned literary scout David Llewelyn.

He said: “First impressions really do count. I very much look forward to reading the competition entries and hope I can work with several new writers and help towards publication of their novels.”

The deadline for entries is July 14.

The English poetry competition – with a top prize of £300 – is being judged by published poet and Marine Conservation Society poet in residence Susan Richardson.

The Welsh poetry competition – again with a top prize of £300 – is being judged by local acclaimed poet and chaired bard Ceri Wyn Jones. Both poetry competitions have a deadline of July 30.

The short radio drama competition – a new venture for the festival – is being judged by former executive producer of radio drama at Radio Wales Kate McAll and local playwright Derek Webb. The top three pieces will be performed live at Rhosygilwen and recorded. Again the deadline for entries is July 30.

More details of the competitions can be found at www.penfrobookfestival.org.uk.

The Penfro Book Festival runs from September 8-11 at Rhosygilwen, Cilgerran.
