The Abbey Shakespeare Players present Richard II in St Dogmaels Abbey from Wednesday, August 2, to Saturday, August 5.

The play tells the story of the quarrels that led to the Wars of the Roses.

King Richard and his cousin, Henry Bolinbroke, battle for the right to the throne, and for the loyalty of the people. The country’s nobles split into factions, and change sides to save their own skins.

“Richard II is about a struggle for power at a time when the country was discontented and divided,” says director Amy Levene.

“Shakespeare was writing about the ‘game of thrones’ more than 400 years ago.”

The Abbey Shakespeare Players’ 31st annual production is full of colourful medieval pageantry, with live music specially written to accompany the action. As darkness falls in the Abbey’s magical ruins, the story draws to its poignant conclusion.

Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions) and are availble from the Theatr Mwldan box office on 01239 621200 or via mwldan.co.uk. There will also be tickets available at the gate on the evening.

This is an outdoor production so please dress warmly. Seating is provided. Alternative indoor venue in case of heavy rain.

Proceeds from the performances will be donated to Hanes Llandoch.
