Birds might be kept away, but visitors will definitely be not be put off by the giant scarecrows returning to Llangwm to celebrate ten years of the village festival.
Llangwm Festival has been a highlight of early summer for many people in and around the village and the annual scarecrow competition is always a big draw.
To celebrate its tenth birthday, festival organisers have pulled out all the stops to make this year’s festival, from today, June 27th, to July 11th, the biggest and best yet.
The festival has grown over the years, and to mark this year’s anniversary, thanks to sponsorship from local businesses, a wide range of events and concerts are on offer.
Chevron has donated £400 for cash prizes for the best scarecrows on display throughout the two weeks of the festival and weary scarecrow hunters can take a break at the Methodist Chapel, where refreshments will be available.
Contributions from Murco means a theatre style marquee will be erected on the rugby field, providing the perfect venue for concerts such as Tales From The Potting Shed by the Smallest Opera in the World, supported by the Night Out scheme of the Arts Council of Wales, and a stand-up comedy night featuring Phil Evans, Tudur Owen and Gillian Elisa.
Chairman of the Llangwm Festival committee Pam Hunt, said: “We have a kids’ talent competition, discos, a Midsummer Ball with an 18-piece big band and a free concert from The One Voice Gospel Choir, from Cardiff.
“It’s been a hell of a thing to get off the ground, but why shouldn’t a small rural village enjoy for two weeks, the same quality entertainment that towns and cities in Wales enjoy all the year round?
“Everyone is working hard to make the whole festival a success.”
Other festival highlights include a Krafty Kids Barbecue and bouncy castle at 4pm this Saturday, and later that evening the opening party at The Cottage Inn with Mike Chant, where the scarecrow anniversary tea towel will be on sale.
On Sunday, a vintage car rally will visit the village at 12.30pm and at 4pm a pet service will be held at St Jerome’s Church.
Llangwm Festival ends on Saturday, July 11th with its traditional carnival and final party at The Cottage Inn. Following a preview at 7pm on July 1st, an exhibition of Llangwm’s past will be on show from noon to 8pm at the village hall until July 6th.
A talk on local dialects by Rob Scourfield will be held on Saturday, July 1st. Tickets are £5 (including buffet lunch), call 01437 890147 or 01437 891580. In the afternoon, under-16s will face the clapometer in Llangwm’s Got Talent. Call Pam Hunt on 01437 899966 to enter.
There is sure to be something for everyone throughout the two weeks. For full details, visit www.llangwm- villages.org.uk.
