YOUNG Pembrokeshire pianist Siriol Jenkins will be giving her first solo recital as part of the St David’s Cathedral Festival in the Young Musician of Dyfed concert on Saturday morning (May 30).

The 16-year-old musician from Wiseman’s Bridge is relishing the challenge of her first hour-long concert in a prestigious musical venue and is planning to offer a variety of music from Bach to Rachmaninoff.

“I’m really looking forward to it. It will be a big event but it’s not often I get the chance to play the range of my repertoire before an audience,” said Siriol, who as well as attending Ysgol y Preseli also spends her Saturdays at the Junior Conservatoire of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff where she is studying piano and harp at diploma level.

The Saturday morning concert traditionally gives the winner of the Young Musician of Dyfed competition a chance to perform at the classical music festival, but with this year’s winner violinist Molly-Rowan Sharples from Brynberian unable to take up the offer, runner-up Siriol was delighted to fill the gap.

There is also a further link between the two talented musicians. As a result of Siriol’s success in the related Dyfed Young Composer project, she has been commissioned to write a piece for Molly.

“I’m looking forward to working with Molly and writing for her,” said Siriol, “but for the moment I’m very focused on this recital.”

Siriol was recently a soloist in a concert by Tenby Male Choir and will also be appearing as a guest of Côr Meibion Cymru in a charity concert at St Mary’s Church, Tenby, on June 12.
