ANNA Netrebko returns to the Met in her acclaimed interpretation of the heroine Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s romantic tragedy Eugene Onegin, which will be shown at Cardigan’s Theatre Mwldan on Saturday April 22 (6pm).
Robin Ticciati conducts all performances of Deborah Warner’s production, which also stars Mariusz Kwiecien and Peter Mattei as Onegin, a role that both have sung previously with the company.
Russian mezzo-soprano Yelizaveta Lavrovskaya suggested Alexander Pushkin’s popular Russian work Eugene Onegin to Tchaikovsky as the basis of an opera.Eugene Onegin premiered at the Moscow Conservatory in 1879.
The opera became popular in Russia. The first performance in the United States was at the Met in 1920. The premiere was initially sung in Italian; however, today’s production is sung in its original Russian.
