ONE of Britain’s most popular musical plays, My Fair Lady will hit the stage at Rhosygilwen, a perfect summer setting to stage this classic.

The original play Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw created quite a stir as it showed the upper class chauvinism of Professor Henry Higgins and the flower girl Eliza Doolittle.

This production, which is being staged on Friday July 13 and Saturday July 14, is no less controversial for beneath the wonderfully written songs, Shaw’s message is still poignant.

Eliza will be played by Sian Cameron, the soprano, originally from Cardigan and who has been having a busy career over the last year as well has giving birth to a baby in May.

Former solicitor Steve Welsh has launched into a new musical career and will be playing the challenging role of Higgins made so famous by Rex Harrison in the 1960s film version.

Gwyn Morris, a firm favourite with local audiences will sing the role of Alfred Doolittle and newcomer to the stage, Rhys McLoughlin of Dinas will play Freddy.

Rhys, who went viral on the internet recently singing in his garden, says: “I think I have the best song in the production and I’m really looking forward to it.’

The musical is directed by Susana Capon and Stephen Pilkington, a favourite from past years, will be conducting from the piano. Stephen’s musical dexterity is a joy to behold.

This is the venue’s annual musical production and features a long picnic interval which will be a treat for those who wish to enjoy the wonderful gardens at Rhosygilwen.

The performances start at 6pm and tickets are obtainable from Rhosygilwen.co.uk or by calling 01239841387 during office hours.
