Penally-based artist Eden Evans is showing his impressionistic paintings in Tenby this month.
His broad brushstrokes in earthy tones, brightened with silvers, greys and whites, capture scenes varying from landscape and marine studies to portraits, with the main attraction always light.
Cool moonlight over Milford docks, daylight in Tenby street scenes, the upward light of reflected snow at Canaston Bridge, illuminated windbreaks on a summer beach, and shadowy evening scenes of the harbour-sides, fishing boats and towns of Pembrokeshire, are all painted by Eden.
Born in the county, Eden Evans’ early artistic skill was nurtured at Pembroke School and, in one of his first jobs at Manor House Wildlife Park, he drew and painted the birds of prey in his care, including his own kestrel.
He believes that painting is all about learning to ‘see’ and that one way to achieve this is to work en plein air (in the open air), constantly drawing from life, not from photographs. With drawing being Eden’s first and main love, and light being the main inspiration, he is more interested in achieving accurate tonal quality than being a colourist. Standing with an easel, Eden considers his subject, exploring different possibilities.
He said: “Painting is not an easy, relaxing activity: It requires constant questioning and decisions about what to include or leave out, what marks to make, how best to create the effects I seek.
“The more I look, the more I see, and this opens yet further options. “If I’m lucky I’ll finish the piece alla prima — all in one go — but often I take the piece back to the studio.
“Then I’m working with the half-finished painting, my memory of the scene and what I wanted to achieve, all within the limitations of the particular media. It’s an almost unconscious process of thinking with the brush.”
Eden Evans’ exhibition at The White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby runs until August 28th.
The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm every day except for Wednesdays.
