Support for youth

FROM time to time the trustees of the Gelliswick Charity like to remind your readers of the charity’s existence and the benefit it has been and continues to be to the young people in the local community.

First established in 1977, the charity has been managed by the Gelliswick Bay Preservation Association, a residents’ group formed to keep the bay as a local amenity.

Income from the invested capital is paid out in grants for the benefit of young people in the parishes of Hakin, Hubberston, Herbrandston and Robeston West and over its 35-year existence some £93,000 has been paid out to the local community.

In common with many charities, income has fallen because of low interest rates and in recent years grants have been limited to supporting local students living away from home in pursuit of their further education.

Careful investment has resulted in an improvement in income, however, and the trustees would like to hear from groups or individuals who come within the scope of the charity and where a small grant would help toward a particular cost they have to meet.

Health, education and the arts are typical activities that the charity may support.
