Shown the way

First published in Letters

I WOULD like to thank those of your readers who came out to vote Labour last Thursday in the police and crime commissioner elections.

This was an election which Labour had not sought, but which we did not turn our back on, and I was privileged to be Labour’s choice.

There was no money to campaign, and the UK government ran the election very badly indeed. Many voters felt disenfranchised.

Commentators are already saying that the only winner in this election was apathy. Of course that is true to a certain extent, but the Tories have benefitted by that apathy, as they so often do when voters are utterly demoralised.

I want to thank every single one of the 31,773 voters who came out to vote for a left of centre candidate in what was previously thought of as a Tory walkover seat.

You have shown the way.
