Swim time special
10:24am Friday 27th September 2013 in Letters
I HAVE been meaning to contact you for some time now to ask if anyone out there is as frustrated as I am over the lack of social / family swimming time Haverfordwest Leisure Centre provides during the week days during school term times.
I wonder who makes the decisions regarding allocation of timetables for the swimming pools at our leisure centre.
Why since the opening of the new centre and pools at St Thomas’s Green (which by the way are a great facility) is it that there is no family swimming allocation after school on any week day between 1600 hrs and 1900 hrs?
In any pool.
I find this hard to believe in fact quite infuriating.
Having attended the old swimming pool off Dew Street Haverfordwest, since a young child and learning to swim there on a weekly basis in the 1970s and 80s with my father and uncle, also spending day after day there, out from under mum’s feet as a teenager during school holidays, and here is where my gripe lies, after school with the boys for a swim and to mess about have some fun and exercise this facility was carefully and strategically removed between the closing of the old pool and the new leisure centre.
During the 1990s I then had my own young family. Working shift work as I still do I would always make an effort to swim with my young daughter straight after school, before going to work on nights. We were regular visitors between 1530 hours and 1700 hours when the official swimming lessons in the old pool began with the instructors.
Here during these time at the local pool she learnt to swim with me as I had with my own father.
This time between 1530 hours and 1700 hours after school gave parents a chance to swim socially for an hour, post school with their children between these times.
Some of the dads would meet up and we would all go in together for fun with our young ones.
I now have my second child a young four-year-old boy and sadly cannot repeat this post school activity with him.
Since the opening of the new centre this family fun time or allocation has been taken away as swimming lessons now start at 1600 hours.
This timing is unsuitable to say the least as by the time you pick your child up from school make your way to the centre, pay, change and get into the water you are lucky if you get 15 minutes in the water.
To make matters worse for such a lovely large facility with three pools all told all of them are out of bounds between these times.
I know people may reply that I could return later at 1900hrs with my son, but at 1900 hours, as are most children of that age he is getting into bed.
So there we go now way around it really.
I as other parents I have spoken to feel aggrieved at this altering of times and feel it is completely unjustified and unfair on a social aspect.
Of course from a business aspect it makes great sense, as to swim after school, hey here a surprise you have to put your hand in your pocket, yet again for lessons and pay the centre instructors to do so.
Wouldn’t it be fairer for everyone including parents to still have that choice?
