ONCE again I felt proud to be a Pembrokeshire man standing among hundreds of our citizens who had travelled to Cardiff as part of the protest against the downgrading of medical services at Withybush.
I was happy to stand among so many concerned people who were prepared to sing and shout loud enough for all to hear.
I was frustrated that representatives were denied an opportunity to speak with members of the Welsh Government who hid out of sight behind the security screens.
I was concerned that some AMs from west Wales did not speak to us.
I was pleased that the Conservative Party AMs and a Plaid Cymru prospective candidate spoke and encouraged us, but I was disappointed that we were subjected to a party political broadcast which rightly blamed the Welsh Government ‘cuts’ whilst not acknowledging the ‘cuts’ emanating from the Westminster Government at a time when they were giving away over £12,000,000,000 in overseas aid.
I am convinced that the Welsh Assembly should not be given extra powers, that the number of AMs should not be increased, that all AMs should be directly elected.
Finally I have admiration for all members of SWAT who have fought long and hard to save Withybush from catastrophic diminution of services.
I ask the people of Pembrokeshire to heed the words of Edmund Burke – ‘It is necessary only for good men to do nothing for wrong to triumph’.
