TWO weeks ago the Western Telegraph newspaper and website had a story saying, “Reassuring Hospital signs cost the taxpayer £2,800”. Sue Lewis, county director and commissioner for the Health Board, said local charities had called for “something visual” to reassure people of the health board’s commitment to the new unit.

“The feedback we received from partners on the initial board was that it was not visual enough and this led us to introduce a second larger board,” she said.

A member of staff told me that: “Sue feels is a small investment to secure the future improvement in cancer services for Pembrokeshire.”

Mrs Lewis herself said: “ A small cost in relation to the overall investment being made in developing cancer services in Pembrokeshire.”

This may be a small cost to the Health Board but not to me.

There have been comments on line about the waste of money the giant sign is, two people in my home town said they were, “surprised I had put my name to such a waste of money”.

I would like to point out that I am on the Chemotherapy Day Unit Project Board and I was a partner / campaigner who was definitely “not” asked if I wanted a giant board costing nearly £3,000.

The money would have been better put into the pot to pay for a new CDU and refurbished Ward 10 seeing as they are a long way short of being able to actually pay for it!

I would ask everyone, please do not assume that every campaigner was in favour of this crazy waste of money.

I have made my thoughts well known to the Hywel Dda Health Board Hierarchy that I am not happy that they make sweeping statements that “all partners” were in favour of this giant sign and waste of money when they were most definitely not!
