MARTYN Roberts (Letters, January 21) says “…Large wind turbines are not for the benefit of the community in which they are sited, but are used by individuals purely for profit. They do not benefit the locals….” Typically of wind energy opponents contacting this newspaper, he writes with such confidence but is completely wrong.

Rhoscrowther Wind Farm Ltd is creating a community fund which will provide investment in local projects.

The owner intends that the funds will be administered by local people and is currently liaising with community councils to explore how this can be achieved.

The fund will be based on an annual contribution made by the owner of the wind farm throughout the 25 year lifetime of the wind farm.

Over 25 years, local people will see approximately £1.56 million invested in community groups and projects.

Renewables UK has a Community Benefits Protocol (England only at present) with which commits developers of qualifying wind power projects to “provide community benefits of £5000 per installed megawatt of capacity or equivalent benefits-in-kind, directly to host communities.” Perhaps Mr Roberts would like to calculate how much money would be pouring into local coffers if the operators of the fossil fuel burning Pembroke Power Station had committed to such generous community benefit terms!
