AN open letter to Cllr J Adams: At its meeting on Wednesday March 18 my council discussed the County Council’s preferred option regarding Secondary School re-organisation for Mid and North Pembrokeshire.
It was appalled to find that the option for post sixteen education was to effectively abdicate responsibility for post sixteen students and allow Pembrokeshire College a monopoly in this sphere.
This means a departure from all five options placed before County Council in October 2014 all of which suggested an 11 to 18 school for Haverfordwest. These options were derived from a public consultation process that should have left no-one in doubt as to the wishes of the people.
My council strongly suggests that to enforce a monopoly where healthy competition exists is poor government. To enforce it against the will of the people you represent is sheer folly. We therefore urge your council to reflect the wishes of the people it represents by:- developing a new school for pupils age 11 to 18; making every effort to make it a centre of excellence; fostering freedom of choice by not allowing Pembrokeshire College or the Haverfordwest school a monopoly; partaking in a ‘free vote’ on any motion placed before the Special Council Meeting called to discuss this matter, thus avoiding the possibility of a minority carrying the day; allowing a recorded vote so that the electorate can know how they have been represented.
We urge our County Councillors to listen to the wishes of the people they represent.
CLLR ROY THOMAS
Mayor of Haverfordwest
