There is increasing concern nationally by social agencies in respect of loneliness experienced by people of all ages, living alone. This should be a concern to us all irrespective of individual circumstances.

Feeling isolated for whatever reason has so many ‘knock on’ effects including mental health, physical well being and depression. Identifying where a problem exists and who are affected, presents difficulties, exacerbated by an understandable reluctance, by individuals, firstly to acknowledge a problem and then to take steps to obtain help.

The situation is often compounded by a disability that may require the need for wheelchair use or additional assistance.

There are a number of agencies, organisations and voluntary groups available in Pembrokeshire that can help.

However, it often requires a family member, friend or neighbour to make the initial move on a person’s behalf.

The Withybush Pain Support Group exists, as a voluntary group, to offer such help, support and assistance to a whole range of people irrespective of ability or need.

We have access to a comprehensive range of Community Transport that can transport wheelchair users and also have lifts to assist mobility.

Members enjoy monthly meetings, social events, visiting speakers, local trips and holidays. It also gives the individual access to a new circle of friends to share experiences and problems with in a safe environment.

We hold meetings in Haverfordwest and Fishguard and all helpers are volunteers from within the group.

The first step is always the most difficult, but once made can open up a whole new world of friends and experiences.
