IT IS being said that better labelling will help to stop farming/ food production ending, that people will buy local or British if it is on the label, this is a delusion.
Before the financial crisis/ austerity started a national paper quoted the manager of a big store saying he talked to 60 customers every day and they all told him the only label they looked at was price.
The German no frills discount firms have also said that most of what they sell is imported. But their share of food sales is rising fast because they are the cheapest.
Because it is losing trade to them the biggest supermarket firm deliberately started a price war last year – the main cause of the milk/lamb crisis, and the banks starting to abandon farming as a very bad risk. The same firm is also promising more price cuts so the rest will have to do the same.
