I HAVE just read the report of the meeting concerning the residential development plan for Newport which has now been passed.

I live in Newport and attended the first meeting which took place in October when the plan was rejected on the density of housing on this site. We all want affordable housing, but to add 20 private houses on this site is very open ended. Newport already has 40% of second homes.

There was a cooling off period of six weeks. In this period of time a petition which 900 people signed from north Pembrokeshire, of which very few were from the Newport area. From your report it appears that some of the councillors were unhappy with the decision but felt obliged to make a U-turn.

The site is not suitable for such a large development.

The infrastructure is fragile.

The roads are narrow with few passing places. Large lorries use the Bentinck road to get to and from the Cilgwyn Gwaun Valley road and pedestrians walk along these narrow roads at their peril.

Hedge alterations, road improvements and the utilities have to be considered too.

Do we really want more open market houses, prices as yet unknown? There are so many questions to be asked if this development goes ahead in its present form.
