I FEEL I have to write to you regarding your headline in last week’s paper.

Why should we “fear” giving basic shelter to some of these poor unfortunate people?

Why use the word fear?

Only they know the meaning of real fear.

Most of them are fleeing the most terrible violence and horror, such as we have thankfully never experienced.

Surely it is our human duty to make available to them any suitable housing that we have in the county to start them off on a new life of safety and kindness.

The people of St Davids made a group of refugees very welcome on St David’s Day and showed them real kindness and hospitality. We should follow their example.

Most of these folk are educated people who will be able to make a new life for themselves if given half a chance.

Pembrokeshire should be doing its utmost to give them that chance, especially as we now have a councillor with specific responsibility for developing the county’s approach to this situation.

Let us do what we can to help give them back their dignity and remember how easily this could happen to any of us, it only needs a few rotten politicians to ruin a country for ever and produce so many unfortunate refugees looking for a better life in safety.

Perhaps we should be flattered that they realise we are one of the few countries in Europe who really uphold human rights and would give them a chance to re-establish the sort of life we take for granted.
