IN your newspaper a letter appeared from Sir Eric Howells who complained about the amount of taxpayers’ money spent on the pomp and ceremony connected with the Queen’s Speech.

I wholeheartedly agree with him. This money could be better spent on our struggling NHS but this is not the only waste of taxpayers’ money connected with the monarchy, for they are in the news yet again for the cost of their private travel, the cost of refurbishing apartments for all the minor royals e.g Kensington Palace, plus the amount of money spent by social gatherings in organising celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee and birthday coming directly from the public purse.

We still have food banks throughout the country, we have a shortage of affordable housing and a shortage of nurses and teachers, so why are we not prioritising how taxpayers’ money is spent, the way that it is being spent at the moment is a misrepresentation of our taxes.

We the people own Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Clarence House and Winsor Palace to mention just a few. We pay for the upkeep and the minor royals live there at our expense.
