THE recent EU referendum has been an extraordinary political event which will have profound economic, social and political consequences.

Indeed, some of these are already unfolding.

However readers cast their vote, can I thank our local area for the civilised way in which the campaigns were conducted (which was far from the case elsewhere) and for such active participation across all age groups. This has given validity to the process.

Now my job is to play a very small part in getting this democratic decision to work, at the same time as reflecting the starkly conflicting views of so many people who took part – not the easiest challenge I have been set!

As we now embark on a process that could take many years to complete, and which will have moments of great uncertainty, it is important for me to stress that, as ever, the decisions we will take will have this area’s hopes and aspirations at the top of our minds.

I hope that everyone who felt strongly enough to vote will also feel able to contact me at any time on simon.hart.mp@parliament.uk
