I WAS wondering if I may, through your newspaper, appeal for information about the history and use of milk cans (milk churns) in Wales?
We are researching the history, design and use or milk cans (milk churns) for a book to be published later this year.
During our research we have come across a reference to the ‘St David’s can’ which according to the reference was “the most favourite utensil of the Welsh dairies”. No illustration or further information was provided.
We have also come across a reference to a ‘Welsh Jack’.
This is in the form of a Goss Ware miniature souvenir which looks like a milk can.
Despite extensive research we have not been able to find any further information about either ‘St David’s cans’ or ‘Welsh Jacks’.
We would love to hear from anyone who can enlighten us with photographs or written accounts. All communications will be acknowledged.
Our email is mspeller@ xtra.co.nz and our address is Springston Lodge, 50 Rattletrack Road, RD4 Christchurch, New Zealand, 7674.
