Empty pension pots

Dear Editor:- The recently published salaries for civil servants once again bags the question ‘Can the British taxpayer afford this level of largesse’?, in view of the present economic situation
and the constraints on private sector pay with high levels of unemployment. The answer must be ‘No’ and this is also a reply which should haven been made during the ‘Thatcher’ period when senior
civil servants in Whitehall started to plan their own strategy for increasing their salaries and allowances. This strategy of largesse and generous annual increases above inflation gradually
filtered down, within a few years, to district, county and town councils. This was also the time when the civil service associations and unions managed to get their inflation proof pensions, with
the cooperation of senior cabinet ministers and front bench politicians. Then they introduced new titles eg Chief Executive, Director, Line Manage etc, for senior members of departments and these
are the personnel that are not directly responsible to the taxpayer, only the elected members and councillors in local government.
