Dear Editor
I refer to the recent David Thorley appeal and subsequent correspondence in your newspaper and am concerned that the misguided loyalty shown by some people is attempting to contradict what has been a fair trial of this man.
Thorley was found guilty by jury at Swansea Crown Court and his subsequent appeal in the High Courts of London was dismissed by three eminent judges – despite his defence being led by one of the leading barristers in the country.
He was found guilty of a crime which he committed while employed as a headteacher, a position of absolute trust. When parents send their children to school, they rightly expect them to be cared for by persons of high morals. Therefore, Thorley has let down the vast majority of teachers who do a magnificent job. I feel that if there is sympathy to be given this should be directed to the children involved and the parents who have had to pick up the pieces.
Let us direct our sympathy to those who deserve it.
