I offer a contributory cause to the cancer, noted by Ruth Ashworth (WT 20th June), now killing Haverfordwest's centre.
Some time ago I had, briefly, to visit the Halifax' office. Emerging from Salutation Square no parking space was anywhere visible save the empty lay-by just short of the bridge outside Iceland. So I pulled in, parked, scanned the Welsh part of the sign, noted the English caution that parking was limited to 30 minutes, entirely missed the bit about loading and unloading only, displayed my disabled badge for good measure, and hobbled across the bridge. Returning, I saw a smartly uniformed parking enforcer already by my car, computerised machine in hand. He charmingly told me I could question the ticket when it arrived. I'd been absent a total of 7 minutes.
I did question the ticket. I was told at length (two pages of A4 plus colour photographs of my offence) that my explanation was irrelevant. So I paid the £35 penalty and vowed - ever since my case - never again to visit any Haverfordwest store save one out of town with capacious parking on its own doorstep.
Who's killed Cock Robin? Haverfordwest's own council's my guess.
