Tragic situation
11:09am Wednesday 12th September 2012 in Letters
AS A dog-lover and former owner of a Labrador, I was horrified by a recent article about the death of three dogs left in a hot car.
The person responsible for inflicting such suffering on these poor animals should, quite rightly face the full consequences of his/her thoughtless actions.
I am, however, also mindful of the fact that somewhere in the world, a child dies every 40 seconds as a result of having diarrhoea caused by the unavailability of both clean drinking water and proper sanitation. A simple calculation leads us to the dreadful fact that 2,000 children suffer and die daily – that’s 700,000 a year.
Many organisations strive to raise awareness of this tragic situation and to finance sustainable measures which will alleviate such suffering. A visit to the website of WaterAid (www.wateraid.org) will both inform and show how realistic help can be given.
