Webb’s spin puts Lawrenny in a tangle
Lawrenny (107 all out) lost to Whitland (140 for 7).
Paul Webb has scored many runs for Whitland but it was his spin bowling which helped them to victory at Lawrenny as he grabbed four wickets at the finish to help ease them to victory by 33 runs.
Jonathan Thomas led the Whitland batting to a healthy 140 for 7 as the young opener scored 40 (three fours) and Matthew Titch Davies was his usual ebullient self with 31 not out at a vital time.
Thomas shared an opening stand of 51 with Dave Lee and Davies was joined by Iestyn Scourfield (16 not out) in a late chase for runs which put 40 on the final tally, despite a 3 for 34 haul from Simon Webb alongside 2 for 25 by Simon Cole.
This sort of score is certainly within Lawrenny's scope but they were hit early on by Raff Williams, the big New Zealander grabbing 3 for 18 and finding support from Titch Davies (2 for 26). Simon Cole (23), Hugh Griffiths (27) and skipper Steve Lewis (19) all tried hard to turn the game in Lawrenny's favour before Paul Webb trundled his slow stuff to such good effect that he claimed 4 for 14 to give new skipper Mark Lee a successful start with the Whitland captaincy.
