Surgery hangs up on 08444 number

The saga of a local medical group’s controversial use of an 08444 telephone number has finally ended, after it changed to local numbers last month.

The Argyle Medical Group’s use of the 08444 number had caused long-standing controversy locally, coupled with an unpopular appointment system, which saw patients charged a great deal more than they would have with a local telephone number. The group has surgeries in Pembroke, Pembroke Dock and Neyland.

The Western Telegraph has previously reported how both Pembroke and Pembroke Dock town councils received complaints regarding the availability of same-day appointments and the 08444 number at the group’s surgeries.

Local MP Stephen Crabb welcomed the news that the number would be scrapped.

He said: “This news will be welcomed by many users of the surgery who have been very frustrated at having to use this expensive 08444 number.”

“In one recent letter I received from a patient, they told that it was common to have to spend over 15 minutes on hold, costing between £2-£2.50 just to make an appointment.”

“I am very pleased that Argyle has listened to the representations we have made and will change the number from October.

“It shows that the group have really listened to patients and to feedback from Neyland, Pembroke Dock and Pembroke town councils, who have also expressed their concerns about this number.”

The Argyle Medical Group and Hywel Dda Health Board were both asked for a response, however neither was able to provide one.

The same day appointment claim is laughable - I had a health issue and rang every morning (from monday on) It was thursday I got through to make an appointment - the first three days it was - hang on, hang on until I was told there were no appointments that day so in the end I paid near enough £10

Can i just say they weren't keen on giving me treatment for an issue i had and was down for surgery in my old home in the South of England - they saw my age and insisted I should take blood pressure pills, statins and aspirin - unfortunately I don't have high blood pressure (it was a little raised after our discussion;) the statins have made me ill - I just guess they saw another target (rather than a patient) that if they hit they'd get even more money from the Welsh Senedd

Tommy is right, the service at this surgery has been a joke for a long time, and costly if you try and call them on a mobile. The change will be welcomed by us all. As for making appointments and walking in there another joke. Clearly this is again run by our wonderful Hywle Ddad LHB and again something that they don't appear to be able to sort out. However I must say that when you do eventually get to see a doctor the service is good and I cant complain about that - its just that you have to put up with the pain and suffering for some time until you can get seen. This new telephone is a step forward though, so lets hope other improvements will follow.
