Just weeks after Debenhams announced its intention to move into Haverfordwest, a fast food giant is the latest high-profile company to look at the county town.

Fast food giant KFC has confirmed it is looking at sites in Haverfordwest with the possibility of creating a drive-through restaurant and around 40 jobs.

Rumours that KFC had been interested in the former Peugeot garage at Portfield have rumbled for a number of years but intensified recently following the opening of the popular drive-through restaurant at Carmarthen.

Portfield county councillor Peter Stock said he had been telling people for a long time that KFC wanted to come to the area.

He said: "Personally I would have preferred it much closer to the centre of town, but I'd prefer to have them here in Haverfordwest than not at all.

"It is very popular and it would help employment. Location is an important issue, people need to get in and out and at the moment the building [former Peugeot site] is an eyesore.

"There is sufficient room there without it causing to residents and it is an opportunity to get people back into that area, it will help to some degree to rejuvenate Snowdrop Lane," said Cllr Stock.

A spokesman for KFC told the Western Telegraph: “We’re always looking for new locations, and due to popular demand from local residents we’d love to open a drive-through restaurant in Haverfordwest.

"It's still early days at the moment and we're looking at a number of potential sites, but a new store would create around 40 career opportunities  for the local community and we hope to have some good news in the future."

Meanwhile Matalan is also thought to be taking renewed interest in Haverfordwest.

The out of town clothing store showed an interest in two units at Springfield Retail Park in September last year but a planning application was withdrawn.
