A verdict of accidental death was recorded at a coroner’s inquest into the death of a 100-year-old nun who was living at a rest home in Fishguard.

Sister Hilda Mary Jackson, of St Teresa’s Rest Home, Windy Hill, died at Withybush Hospital on October 5th, after falling and hitting her throat on a wooden chair.

The inquest heard Sister Jackson, who moved to Fishguard in 2002 and was a ‘joyous lady’, used a walking aid but often left it in her room and was reminded by staff at the rest home to use it.

On October 5th, Sister Jackson was walking across the dining room without her walking aid when she fell forwards and hit her throat on a wooden chair.

The inquest was told Sister Jackson also hit her chin, rolled over, fell on her back and seemed to be choking.

Following the fall, Sister Jackson complained of a pain in her throat and was taken to Withybush Hospital as a precaution, after being checked over by a doctor and ambulance staff who could not find anything wrong with her.A post mortem report by Dr Lakshmi Nair found Sister Jackson had suffered a laryngeal and tracheal haemorrhage leading to respiratory failure.

Pembrokeshire Coroner Mark Layton recorded a verdict of accidental death.
