Work from some of north Pembrokeshire’s finest artists will be on show in Japan from tomorrow (Tuesday) as Fishguard Arts Society takes an exhibition of magnetic art to Kyoto.

The seed for the exhibition was planted last Christmas when Japanese artist Natsuki Kurimoto visited an exhibition of artist-designed fridge magnets in Fishguard Library Gallery.

He took the idea back to Japan and kept in touch with the arts society. The result is a new exhibition which has moved a long way from fridge magnets, but still uses magnets as the fixing system.

This limits the size of work making it easy to transport.

“The featured works from the Fishguard Arts Society’s members will help to set up beneficial links, both financially and culturally, showing both the expertise and the professionalism of our artists who are based here in Wales,”

said Fishguard Arts Society’s Gaynor McMorrin.

“There is a unique blend of our culture, land and seascape in our artists’ work which we will aim to put before a Japanese audience in a way that is accessible and perceived as different to the norm.”

A looped DVD will run in the exhibition showing other work by exhibiting artists. Sixteen Japanese artists are also showing with the Pembrokeshire artists. It is hoped that working connections will be established that will culminate in workshops and exhibitions in Pembrokeshire next year.

Drawn to the East – the Magnetic Attraction of Japan, supported by Wales Arts International, will be in the Arton Art Gallery, Kyoto from December 11th to 25th.
