Pilot scheme will be held during peak summer period in Tenby

The two minor injury units at Pembroke Dock and Tenby WILL close, the extraordinary meeting of Hywel Dda Health Board has decided today.

The board, meeting in Carmarthen, is currently going through recommendations for the future shape of health services in mid and west Wales.

During Your Health Your Future Consultation people were asked about transferring minor injury services currently provided at South Pembrokeshire and Tenby Hospitals to community based services.

The extraordinary board meeting today supported recommendations to commission enhanced access to primary care (community based) services, close the units and redeploy the specialist nursing staff to emergency services at Withybush Hospital.

But the board announced that there will be an additional pilot service in Tenby during the peak tourist period.

A seasonal minor injuries service will initially be piloted for eight weeks from mid July to September (including weekends and Bank Holidays).

The provider of the service is to be determined but could include a local GP practice, pharmacy or a voluntary sector provider.

Director of Planning and Operations Mark Brandraeth said: “On average only 11 people attend the Minor Injury Unit in South Pembrokeshire a day and 15 people a day at Tenby Hospital. During the temporary closure of the Minor Injury Units in January 2012 it became clear these people only attended the units for very minor injuries or illnesses which can be dealt with by self care or through primary healthcare such as their GP or local pharmacy.

“The health board listened to local people and aims to meet the challenges we heard in the consultation, by retaining the services locally which will minimise additional patient travel.

“We recognise the increase of population in Tenby during the summer months and the concerns raised by residents about this and our plans include extra provision to deal with this increased demand.”

'11 people attend minor injuries in South Pembs.'

Could it be a case that these 11 people don't have a car to take them to Withybush for treatment?

So thats another nail in the coffin for those who cannot travel to Withybush. Have these people who have decided to close the unit ever tried parking at Withybush hospital???? It is a nightmare. I like the way they say that the individuals could be seen by a GP, obviously they are not registered to the Argyle Medical Centre in Pembroke Dock as we all know how sucessful it was when they decided to merge all the GP's!!!

Who is this man speaking about listening to the people of Tenby - is he real. From what I have heard this Hylwd Ddada Health Board have ignored all of the public comments - the petitions, the completed questionnaires, the public meetings, and what our Town Council has said.They have done their own thing and this whole consultation was a stitch up. I must confess to being fooled myself as I did believe the hype and that the public voice would be heard. They never intended to save our local services from the outset. These men have deliberately let Tenby hospital run down - perhaps they want to sell it to a supermarket - Tescos I expect - and then ask them to put in a pharmacy and treat our injuries ! These people in Hylwe Ddada will not be satisfied until everything is in Carmarthen !

Perhaps we should demand a report of the findings of the questionnaires? It's a public consultation and I feel we should be entitled to see a copy of this.
