End of an era for college Army recruitment
2:52pm Thursday 17th January 2013 in News
The last ever Army enlistment event in the county was held at Pembrokeshire College today (Thursday).
After this date, anyone thinking of joining the armed forces in Pembrokeshire will have to travel to Swansea, where new contract-holder Capita Plc will hold recruitment events for the Army.
Artist and Colour Sergeant Barry John of the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment, who was invited to help at the event in Merlin Theatre, said:
“Pembrokeshire has always been a great place for people to join the Army, and it’s quite sad to see that come to an end.”
C/Sgt Barry, who was awarded an MBE in 2010 for his work in Army recruitment, added:
“And it’s symbolic for me because I signed up so many people here in the college, and my grandfather before me was signed up in Pembroke Dock before he went off to the trenches.”
