One of the most controversial developments in Pembrokeshire planning history has escaped enforcement again.

National Park planners have decided to take no action over a failure to comply with an approved landscaping scheme at Bettws Newydd in Newport.

The house caused huge controversy after it was built without sticking to approved plans. It was branded an ‘eyesore’ by opponents and sparked a lengthy planning battle.

An appeal in December 2010 eventually allowed the development to remain in place, but with a number of conditions imposed.

Last week Pembrokeshire Coast National Park planners heard that the bunding on the eastern side of the site was not the required height.

An inspection of earth banking and bunding found they were between 25.5cm and 75cm below the required height.

The applicant’s landscape architect then carried out an appraisal of the bunds which was sent to Pembrokeshire County Council’s landscape officer for an independent view.

Head of development management Vicki Hirst said: “The differences are relatively minor and will have little or no effect on the screening of the site.

“In my view it is not expedient to take action on this matter.”

Members voted not to take any action.
