MAJOR redevelopment plans for the County Library in Haverfordwest have been shelved over spiralling costs.

In April, it was announced that Pembrokeshire County Council had been awarded £300,000 from the Welsh Government to refurbish the building and introduce new facilities, including a ‘healthy hub’ and children’s play and learning area.

The redevelopment was expected to take 18 to 24 months, with lending services relocated to the Community Learning building behind the library while work was carried out.

But Pembrokeshire County Council has now said it is reconsidering its plans to redevelop the site, and is looking into the possibility of relocating to the town centre.

Councillor Elwyn Morse, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure, said: “Unfortunately we are unable to go forward with the original proposals because tender prices were well over the approved budget.

“In short, it is not feasible to proceed with the project in these straitened times.

“We are however actively considering other options to provide a 21st century library in Haverfordwest and that could include re-locating to the town centre.”

He added that moving into the town centre would provide a “much-needed boost” for the area.

Haverfordwest Civic Society vice chairman Mark Muller said: “Anything that goes into the town centre has to be applauded.

“Hopefully if the service is relocated it will continue to be one worthwhile having.”

The council added that if the library was moved from Dew Street it would then be in a position to market the site for redevelopment.
