A Pembroke Dock pensioner narrowly missed out on a massive £1milllion win from a £1 football bet at the weekend – but can console himself with scooping a £72,000 prize.
The man, who has asked his bookmaker Coral not to release his details, scooped the biggest payout of Coral’s Football Jackpot so far.
Had Manchester United beaten Liverpool the mystery punter would have landed himself £1m but his pick of 14 out of 15 correct bets saw him take home the £72,000.
"After correctly predicting the outcome of 12 matches on Saturday, this customer was the only person still in the running for the £1 million jackpot, and after Swansea beat West Brom, he was just two results away from winning the life-changing amount, but unfortunately Manchester United failed to win at Anfield, which ended the dream," said Coral's David Stevens.
“However Arsenal's defeat of Tottenham meant he collected the very nice consolation of £72,253.57, which he said will still make a huge difference to him,"
"New Man United boss David Moyes was unable to improve his record against Liverpool, and who knows, if Sir Alex Ferguson hadn't retired, maybe there would be a new millionaire in Wales now!" added David.
The fifteen matches on this weekend's Coral Football Jackpot coupon were: Cardiff v Everton (draw) Newcastle v Fulham (home win) Norwich v Southampton (home win) West Ham v Stoke (away win) West Brom v Swansea (away win) Liverpool v Manchester United (customer picked away win) Arsenal v Tottenham (home win) Birmingham v Ipswich (draw) Blackburn v Bolton (home win) Wigan v Nottingham Forest (home win) Yeovil v Reading (away win) Aberdeen v St Johnstone (draw) Inverness CT v Hearts (home win) Crystal Palace v Sunderland (home win) Motherwell v Kilmarnock (home win).
