A SCHOOL coursework assignment has inspired a Pembrokeshire student to become an entrepreneur, launching his own range of clothing thanks to a 'big idea'.
Having been tasked with creating a new clothing brand as part of his GCSE studies in graphic design, 17-year-old Conor Ratcliff later came up with the business concept of Rat Clothing, a skateboard apparel company.
Just ten months on, Conor is busy creating new product lines for the rapidly growing brand.
He said: "I came up with the idea while in school, where we were asked to come up with branding for a clothing company. I then thought about it again while at Pembrokeshire College. I came up with a design, and it's really gone on from there."
Within a month of making his first order, Conor sold out of his first design and has since gone on to sell more than 100 of his T-shirts.
Having taken the initiative to start his own business, Conor has shown just the sort of entrepreneurial spirit Big Ideas Wales is looking for.
Big Ideas Wales is a Welsh Government campaign encouraging young people to become more entrepreneurial.
Conor, of Letterston, said that that help and advice offered by Pembrokeshire College and the Welsh Government had proved invaluable to getting his fledgling business off the ground.
"The college provided information on things like taxes and how to set up a business – things I didn't know about before. They also passed me on to Small Steps to Enterprise, which helps young entrepreneurs."
Conor is now drawing up plans to expand his range of merchandise, including a selection of winter clothing.
Big Ideas Wales is offering young people between 16 and 25 years of age the chance to develop ideas they might have of running their own business into reality through two Step workshops being held at Ivy Bush, Carmarthen, on Wednesday, October 2, between 10am and 12.30pm and 1.15pm and 4.15pm.
